I had just finished the
renovation on our sunroom and had my mind set on finding the
perfect coffee tabIe. It seemed that the logical shape for
the given space would
be that of a small surf board. Then, I thought, why not
just use an actual skim board?! I cruised over to the closest
surf shop and found the board you see here–with its cool
print already in place. I then designed and created a base
(at left) using 3/4" poplar
veneer plywood. Since there were no straight joints or 90 degree
angles to speak of, the assembly and glue-up was a pain in
the butt. Still, thanks to steel dowels and marine epoxy, the
piece came out clean, strong, and surprisingly stable–perfect
for rum-based beverages!
