I believe this was the third piece that  was printed up and distributed. The shot and the text was lifted from a book on jazz in the school library. The text was originally on the adjacent page which was also captured on film when we went to make a litho of the photo. We didn't know what to do with the text, so we cut  it up and recomposed it to our liking. The fact that the density of the lettering is based on the darkness of the image  behind it attests to the funky old-school print shop methods and materials that were our means of production.

The little Bell System phone sign that you see next to the word harmonies would later appear in the cover art of the school paper, The Evanstonian. In that context it was even more obscure  than it is in this picture, yet it  was discovered by many Monk fans.
